Pressing a personalised Christmas design onto a red sweatshirt with a heat press, with festive sweatshirts and a Christmas tree in the background

How to Make a Personalised Christmas Jumper with DTF

Want a personalised Christmas jumper that looks shop-bought, not stuck together with tinsel and safety pins? The quickest way is to press a DTF transfer onto a plain sweatshirt or hoodie. You design it, we print it, and you press it at home in under a minute. One gang sheet can hold a whole family's or office's designs, names included.

This guide covers choosing the right jumper, designing your artwork, putting a group order on one sheet, and pressing it so it lasts well beyond Christmas Jumper Day.

When is Christmas Jumper Day 2026?

Save the Children's Christmas Jumper Day is on Thursday 10 December 2026. Plenty of schools, offices and clubs pick a different day that suits them, so check your own date before you plan your order.

Whatever the date, leave yourself time to order, press and do a test piece. Order by 1pm, Monday to Friday, and your DTF transfers are printed and dispatched the same day. Next-day delivery options are available at checkout.

Why DTF works well for a personalised Christmas jumper

  • Full colour, fine detail. Photos, gradients done with halftones, small text and bright festive colours all print in one go.
  • Works on dark and light garments. DTF prints with a white base, so your design shows up on a red, green or navy jumper.
  • No minimums. Make one jumper or forty. Each design can be different, so everyone gets their own name.
  • Use a jumper you already own. Pressing onto a plain sweatshirt in your wardrobe is an easy way to avoid buying a novelty jumper you'll only wear once.

Step 1: Choose the right jumper

A DTF transfer needs a smooth, flat surface to bond to. That makes a plain sweatshirt or hoodie the best choice for a printed Christmas jumper.

Good choices

  • Cotton or polycotton sweatshirts and hoodies with a smooth face
  • Kids' sweatshirts for school non-uniform days
  • T-shirts and long-sleeve tops, if you want something lighter for the office

Test first

  • Chunky or cable knits. A transfer can't sink into a deep, textured knit evenly, so the print may not sit flat. Try a test piece before you commit.
  • 100% polyester or garments with a lot of stretch. These need a lower temperature (see the settings below).
  • Nylon and coated or waterproof fabrics. We don't recommend DTF for these.

Not sure about a fabric? Our guide to which fabrics you can use for DTF printing covers the common ones.

Step 2: Design your Christmas jumper artwork

Popular ideas for a personalised Christmas jumper include:

  • Family name sets, such as "The Smiths' Christmas 2026" with each person's name underneath
  • Matching designs for couples, siblings or the whole family, including the dog
  • Office or department jumpers with a festive pun and the team name
  • Class or club designs with every child's name
  • A fake "knitted" pattern printed flat, which gives the classic jumper look without the bulk

Artwork checklist

  • Work at 300 dpi at the size you'll print.
  • Use a transparent background. Anything that isn't transparent will print.
  • Avoid semi-transparent pixels and soft fades. Use halftones instead.
  • Convert text and strokes to outlines, and use a CMYK colour profile.
  • Don't mirror your artwork. We handle that.
  • Stick to your own designs. Avoid licensed characters, film logos and charity branding.

What size should the design be?

Measure across the chest of the actual jumper before you set your design size, and remember that kids' sizes need a smaller print than adults'. If you need an exact measurement, our guide on ordering a DTF transfer at an exact size shows you how.

Step 3: Put the whole group on one gang sheet

If you're making jumpers for a family, an office or a school class, you don't need a separate order for each person. Use the DTF Gang Sheet Builder to lay every design on one 56 cm wide sheet.

  1. Open the Gang Sheet Builder and choose your sheet length.
  2. Upload your designs. The builder has a background remover if you need it.
  3. Add names. The Names and Numbers tool lets you type each name in and set the font and colour. Our guide to ordering names and numbers on a gang sheet walks you through it.
  4. Check your layout in the builder's live preview. We don't offer artwork checks, so the preview is your chance to spot spelling mistakes and sizing before you order.
  5. Add to basket and order by 1pm, Monday to Friday, for same-day dispatch.

Making the same design for everyone? See how to fill a whole gang sheet with one design. If you'd rather not cut out each transfer yourself, the Cut DTF Gang Sheet arrives cut for you.

Want to try DTF before a big group order? Start with a DTF Now Sample Pack. If you'd like a paper-based option, ECO-DTF has a paper carrier with no PET film, is recyclable with paper and is OEKO-TEX.

Step 4: Press your personalised Christmas jumper

You'll need a heat press, a Teflon sheet or parchment paper, and your transfers. Trim away anything outside your design first, including any file names or order numbers printed on the sheet.

These are starting points. Always follow the instructions supplied with your transfers, and do a test press on a spare garment or inside hem first.

  • Cotton and polycotton: 157°C for 13–15 seconds
  • 100% polyester and spandex: 130°C for 8–10 seconds
  • Pressure: firm, around 55–70 psi depending on the fabric
  1. Lay the jumper flat on the press. Thick seams or zips can stop the platen pressing evenly, so keep them off the print area. A pressing pillow can help on hoodies.
  2. Position the transfer image side up.
  3. Press at the settings above.
  4. Let it cool for 3–5 seconds, then peel the film back from one corner in one quick motion.
  5. Cover with a Teflon sheet or parchment paper and post-press for 5–8 seconds to seal the edges.

The full steps are on our DTF press instructions page, and you'll find Teflon sheets and other kit in Pressing Supplies.

Step 5: Look after it so it lasts

Your personalised jumper should come out again next December. Turn it inside out, wash at 30°C or below, air-dry it rather than tumble drying, and never iron directly on the print. Our care guide for DTF printed clothing has the full details.

Selling Christmas jumpers? Plan your stock early

If you make personalised jumpers for customers, schools or workplaces, December orders tend to arrive in a rush. Put several customers' designs on one gang sheet to keep costs down, and keep a few blank sweatshirts in common sizes ready to press. For large runs, you can send a bulk order quote request. Personalised Christmas jumper FAQs

Can I design my own Christmas jumper?

Yes. Create your design, upload it to the Gang Sheet Builder, and we print it as a DTF transfer. You then press it onto any suitable sweatshirt, hoodie or T-shirt with a heat press.

Can I put DTF transfers on a knitted Christmas jumper?

Smooth sweatshirts and hoodies give the best result. On chunky or textured knits the transfer may not bond evenly, so test on a small area first.

What can I do if I don't have a Christmas jumper?

Press a festive design onto a plain sweatshirt or T-shirt you already own. It's quick, and you'll have something you'll wear again.

Can I use a household iron instead of a heat press?

For the most reliable result, use a heat press. DTF needs steady heat and firm, even pressure, which is hard to get across a whole design with a household iron. If an iron is all you have, test on a spare garment first.

How many jumpers can I fit on one gang sheet?

It depends on your design sizes and the sheet length. Lay everything out in the Gang Sheet Builder and the preview shows you exactly how much fits.
